The Art of Holding It All Together: Hair Accessories Edition.

Hair ties, sticks and headbands, plus bag charms and pouches: what each does, how to use it, what we skip, and prices from ₹149.

The main types of hair accessories are the hair tie, scrunchie, claw clip, barrette, bobby pin, hair stick, headband and snap clip. Each one holds hair in a different way: ties hold a ponytail, clips and claws lift hair up, pins and sticks hold a bun, and headbands push it back.

The same idea works for what you carry. A bag charm gives your keys or bag something to find at a glance, and a utility pouch stops cables, lipstick and cards from sinking to the bottom. So this is an accessories edition in the plainest sense: things that hold things together.

We are a Noida brand that makes handcrafted women's jewellery and accessories, and we checked every product link and price below on 5 November 2026. Where we do not sell something, such as a claw clip, we say so.

The short version

The main types of hair accessories are the hair tie or elastic, scrunchie, claw clip, barrette, bobby pin, hair stick, headband and snap clip. What separates them is what they hold: ties hold a ponytail, clips and claws hold hair up or back, pins and sticks hold a bun, and headbands keep hair off the face.

That is the hair half of this guide. The other half is the bag half, because the same instinct, keeping everything where it should be, applies to what you carry. A bag charm is a small decoration that clips onto a bag, keys or a jacket. A utility pouch is a zipped organiser for cosmetics, cables and cards that can sit in a bag or be carried by its wrist strap.

  • Hair tie or elastic: holds a ponytail or bun. Wikipedia says elasticity and durability vary by material. Ours start at ₹349, like the Molten Glow Hair Tie (₹349).
  • Scrunchie: a fabric-covered elastic. We do not sell one.
  • Claw clip, barrette, bobby pin: the clip family. We do not sell these either.
  • Hair stick: turns a twisted bun into a finished style. The Minimal Safety Pin Hair Stick (₹449) comes in gold and silver finishes.
  • Headband: keeps hair back. The Blush Pearl Elegance Headband (₹699) and Midnight Spark Beaded Headband (₹699) have a black base with beads.
  • Bag charms: all 16 in stock cost ₹149 to ₹199, for example the Midnight Forest Handmade Bag Charm (₹149).
  • Pouches: our utility pouches run from ₹799 to ₹1,199, for example the Scarlet Muse Pouch (₹799), a 17.8 cm red makeup pouch.

Our view: for hair, choose by what the style needs to hold, not by what looks pretty in the packet. A hair stick and an elastic will do most jobs. For bags, one charm and one pouch is enough. Three charms on one bag looks cluttered, and a pouch only helps if you actually use it.

Our Hair Accessories page is small: nine pieces in stock on 5 November 2026. We are honest about that below. Shipping on any order is free above ₹499.

What are the different types of hair accessories?

There are about ten everyday types. Sewguide lists 25 names and We Heart This lists 15 clips and pins, but most of those are variations. The table below groups them by the job they do.

Types of hair accessories at a glance
Type What it holds Works best for Do we sell it?
Hair tie or elastic A ponytail or bun Every hair length Yes, from ₹349, such as the Silver Chain Rubber Band
Scrunchie A ponytail, softly Medium to long hair No
Claw clip (also called a hair claw or clamp) A twist or half-up style Thick or long hair No
Barrette A section of hair Pulling back the front No
Bobby pin Small sections, flat Pinning flyaways No
Hair stick A bun Medium to long hair Yes, Minimal Safety Pin Hair Stick (₹449)
Headband Hair off the face All lengths Yes, Midnight Spark Beaded Headband (₹699)
Snap or bendy clip A front section Short hair or fringe No

The "works best for" column is our view, built from how each one grips. It is not a rule. We cover the clip and pin differences next.

What is the difference between a hair clip and a hairpin?

A hair clip closes on the hair, usually with a spring or a hinge. A hairpin slides through it. Wikipedia's hair clip article describes the barrette as a clasp that holds hair in place, and says larger barrettes of about 8 to 10 cm pull back longer or thicker hair. Its hairpin article describes the modern U-shaped pin as bent wire with kinks along both sides that help it stay put during normal movement.

In practice, that means a clip is quick and a pin is neat. A clip goes on in one hand while you walk. A pin needs a mirror, but it can sit flat against the head and nearly vanish. Wikipedia notes that some pins are designed to be nearly invisible, while others are decorative and covered in jewels.

A hair stick is a third idea. It is a long pin with a decorative end, built to hold a coiled bun. We say more on it below.

Hair tie or scrunchie: which holds better?

A plain elastic hair tie holds tighter, and a scrunchie holds softer. Wikipedia defines a scrunchie as a fabric-covered elastic hair tie used mainly for medium to long hair, and says its inventor, Rommy Hunt Revson, made it as a gentler alternative to metal hair ties. Its hair tie article adds that elasticity and durability vary by material.

So the choice is simple. Pick a thin elastic when you need a firm ponytail that stays put on a long day. Pick a scrunchie when you want something looser that does not leave a hard line. We only sell the first kind, and every piece is a hair tie or band with metal or bead detail:

All six cost ₹349. The downside: a band with a metal accent is not the one to sleep in. The accent can catch on a pillow and pull. Take it off at night.

How do you use a hair stick?

You twist your hair into a coil and push the stick through it so it catches both sides. That is the whole method, and it works because the coil does the holding, not the stick.

  1. Gather your hair into a low or mid ponytail and hold it in one hand.
  2. Twist the ponytail until it tightens, then coil it against your head into a flat bun.
  3. Hold the coil in place with one hand.
  4. Push the stick through the coil at a slight angle, so the point comes out the other side and catches a few strands of hair on the way.
  5. Tuck any loose ends and check that the stick sits snug.

The Minimal Safety Pin Hair Stick (₹449) is a hair stick made to look like a safety pin, in gold and silver finishes, for sleek buns. It costs ₹449. A stick holds best on medium to long hair, and it is the one accessory that makes a plain bun look finished. Fine, slippery hair may need a small elastic under the coil first.

If you wear your hair in a bun often, read how to style handmade jewellery for ideas on pairing it with earrings.

How do you wear a headband?

Put it on from the back and slide it forward until it rests behind your hairline, not on your forehead. Wikipedia describes a headband as an accessory worn in the hair or around the forehead to hold hair away from the face. Most are elastic textile loops, but some are flexible plastic or metal arcs.

Ours are arcs with a black base and beads: the Blush Pearl Elegance Headband (₹699) and the Midnight Spark Beaded Headband (₹699), both ₹699. Wear one with your hair down for a tidy, finished look, or push it back with a half-up style. Place it a little further back than you think, because beads sitting too far forward feel heavy.

The downside: a rigid headband can press behind the ears. If it does, bend it out slightly with both hands before you give up on it, or wear it further back on the head.

Which types of hair accessories suit thick, short or fine hair?

Thick hair needs more grip, short hair needs smaller clips, and fine hair needs soft holds. That is our rule of thumb, not a law, and your hair may be the exception.

  • Thick hair: a larger barrette (Wikipedia says 8 to 10 cm ones pull back thicker hair), a claw clip or a hair stick through a coil. A thin elastic alone often slips.
  • Short hair: a headband, or small clips and pins to hold the front back. Hair ties only help once there is enough length to gather.
  • Fine hair: elastics and soft headbands. Heavy clips tend to slide out.
  • Daily wear: a hair tie and a headband. Both go on in seconds.

From our range, a hair stick such as the Minimal Safety Pin Hair Stick (₹449) works for thick hair in a bun, and the elastic bands suit most hair for daily wear. See all of them on our hair accessories page.

Which types of hair accessories do we not sell?

We do not sell claw clips, scrunchies, barrettes, bobby pins or snap clips. We searched the products on our site on 5 November 2026 and found none. Our Hair Accessories page has nine pieces in stock: one hair stick, two headbands and six hair ties or bands.

We would rather say that than send you to a page that does not have what you want. If you came for a claw clip, you will not find one here yet. If you came for a stick, a headband or a good-looking elastic, you will.

What are bag charms?

A bag charm is a small decoration that you clip onto a bag, your keys or even your jeans. It does two jobs. It makes a bag easy to spot in a pile, and it gives a plain bag some personality for very little money.

Every bag charm we have in stock costs between ₹149 and ₹199. That is 16 pieces, and all of them are under ₹200. Our listings describe them as handmade, and several are crochet or beaded:

Browse the full set on the bag charms page, or look at the wider bag accessories collection.

How do you attach and style a bag charm?

Clip it to a zip pull, a strap ring or a belt loop, then let it hang. Our listings say the charms can be clipped to keys, a bag, or a jacket, and the Fresh Apple Beaded Charm listing adds jeans and keychains.

Three rules we would follow:

  • One charm per bag. A second one is fine on a large tote. A third is clutter.
  • Match the weight to the bag. A heavy charm on a thin strap drags it sideways. Light crochet and beaded charms are safer on small bags.
  • Pick one colour from the bag. A pink charm on a pink-lined bag looks planned. A random colour looks like an accident.

Whether bag charms look tacky is a matter of restraint. One small charm on a plain bag looks deliberate. A cluster of five on a small bag looks busy. A bag chain such as the BeadBloom Bag Chain Accessories (₹149) works as the one decoration, so you do not need to add anything else.

What is a utility pouch, and how is it different from a makeup pouch?

A utility pouch is a zipped organiser for small things, and a makeup pouch is the same thing sold for cosmetics. The difference is mostly in the name. Both keep small items from sinking to the bottom of a bag.

We have 32 of them in the makeup pouches collection, priced ₹799 to ₹1,199. Two are worth singling out:

  • Scarlet Muse Pouch (₹799): a red makeup pouch with a black lining, a gold-tone zip and a wide, flat base. The listing gives its size as 17.8 cm, so it fits in a tote, an office bag or a suitcase.
  • Obsidian Edit Pouch (₹999): a charcoal black utility pouch for cosmetics, cords and cards. Its listing says it can sit inside a tote as an insert or be carried as a wristlet with the strap attached.

If you want one you can carry on its own, look at wristlet styles such as the Crimson Muse Wristlet (₹999) and Amethyst Grace Pouch (₹1,199). For the cheapest, the ₹799 group includes the Solara Tide Pouch (₹799), the Rosé Lumière Pouch (₹799) and the Verdant Noir Pouch (₹799).

The downside: a pouch only helps if everything has a home. One pouch for makeup, one for chargers. If you toss it all into one, you have just moved the mess into a smaller bag.

How do you put hair, bag and pouch accessories together?

Pick one item from each family and keep the colours close. Here are three combinations from our range, with the total worked out so you can see the price before you add to cart.

Kit Hair Bag charm Pouch Total
Under ₹1,500 Molten Glow Hair Tie (₹349) Midnight Forest Handmade Bag Charm (₹149) Solara Tide Pouch (₹799) ₹1,297
Black and silver Minimal Safety Pin Hair Stick (₹449) Silver Wave Charms (₹149) Obsidian Edit Pouch (₹999) ₹1,597
Pearl and red Blush Pearl Elegance Headband (₹699) Mini Bow Bling Bag Charm (₹199) Crimson Muse Wristlet (₹999) ₹1,897

Totals are the sum of the listed prices on 5 November 2026. Shipping is free above ₹499, so each of these kits ships free.

These are our suggestions, not a rule. If you like a plainer look, drop the charm. If your hair is short, swap the stick for a headband.

FAQs

What are the different uses of hair accessories?

Hair accessories do four jobs. They hold hair in place, such as a tie on a ponytail. They lift it away from the face, as a headband or barrette does. They hold a style together, like a stick through a bun. And they decorate. Wikipedia's headband article lists keeping hair back and fashion among its main uses. Most pieces do more than one of these at once.

How do you use hair accessories if you are a beginner?

Start with two: an elastic and a headband. Both go on in seconds and are hard to get wrong. Add a hair stick once you are comfortable twisting a bun, and a clip once you know where you want hair held. Do not buy a set of ten. Wear what you have for a month and add the piece you miss.

Which hair tie is best?

The best tie is the one that holds your hair without pulling or leaving a deep line. Thin elastics hold firmest. Fabric-covered ones, such as scrunchies, are softer. Wikipedia notes that elasticity and durability vary by material, so check how a tie feels before trusting it for a long day. Our six hair bands start at ₹349.

Which hair clip is best?

It depends on your hair. Thicker hair does better with a larger barrette or a claw clip, while short or fine hair needs small clips that do not slide. Wikipedia says larger barrettes of about 8 to 10 cm pull back longer or thicker hair. We do not sell clips, so pick one by hair type and test it before a long day.

Are hair accessories in style?

Hair accessories come and go with trends, and the scrunchie is the clearest example. Wikipedia traces it from the 1980s and 1990s, through a decline in the early 2000s, to a comeback in the mid-to-late 2010s. We cannot tell you what will be fashionable next year, but elastics, sticks and headbands have stayed useful through all of it.

What are bag charms used for?

A bag charm decorates a bag and helps you spot it in a pile. You can clip it to a zip pull, a strap, your keys or a belt loop. Our listings describe clipping charms to keys, bags and jackets, and one adds jeans and keychains. It is a cheap way to change how a bag looks without buying a new bag. All 16 bag charms we have in stock cost ₹149 to ₹199.

Are bag charms tacky?

Not when you keep to one. A single small charm on a plain bag looks deliberate, and a cluster on a small bag looks cluttered. Choose a charm that echoes a colour on the bag and avoid heavy ones on thin straps. That is our view. Our simplest, lightest options are the crochet and beaded charms.

How do you attach a bag charm?

Clip it to a zip pull, a strap ring or a belt loop and let it hang. Our listings say our charms clip onto keys, bags and jackets. Check that the ring or loop you pick is sturdy, because a charm that sits on a flimsy loop can pull it loose over time.

What is a utility pouch used for?

A utility pouch keeps small items together: cosmetics, charging cords, cards, jewellery. It sits inside a larger bag or, with a wrist strap, goes out on its own. Our Scarlet Muse Pouch is a 17.8 cm makeup pouch, and our listing notes the same pouch can carry jewellery, chargers or stationery.

Start with one of each

The point of all of this is simple. Pick one hair accessory, one bag charm and one pouch, and you will notice how much less you rummage and re-pin. A hair stick, a ₹149 charm and a ₹799 pouch is a small start.
