Red on the wrist. A moon at each ear. Gold at the waist.
A Hashtack styling guide · Updated 13 October 2026
What jewellery should you wear on Karwa Chauth? Red or maroon bangles, one pair of chandbali earrings and a slim waist chain. That trio covers the bangles, earrings and waistband of the solah shringar, works with a saree, lehenga or suit, and still feels light when the moon finally shows up after a long day of fasting.
We are Hashtack, a handcrafted jewellery label based in Noida. Every October our inbox fills with the same three questions: which bangles, which earrings, and does a waist chain look too modern for a puja. This guide answers all three, plus the size, colour and comfort questions nobody else seems to cover. Wherever we suggest a piece, it comes from our Karwa Chauth jewellery edit, and we tell you what it costs.
Quick Answer: The Short Version
For Karwa Chauth, wear three pieces that do the work of a full bridal set: red or maroon bangles on both wrists, one pair of chandbali earrings, and a thin waist chain over your saree or lehenga. Keep the neck light. That one change makes the look feel festive without becoming heavy by moonrise.
Karwa Chauth 2026 falls on Thursday, 29 October. The fast runs from around 6:31 AM until moonrise, which is close to 8:17 PM in Delhi and varies by city. So whatever you wear, you will wear it for roughly 14 hours without food or water. Comfort is not a side issue on this day. It decides what you choose.
Bangles come first because they sit inside the tradition itself. Choodiyan (bangles, traditionally red), karn phool (earrings) and kamarband (a waistband) all appear in the solah shringar, the sixteen adornments many married women follow on Karwa Chauth. Red, maroon, pink, orange, yellow and gold are the colours most families treat as auspicious, and many women simply wear their wedding outfit again.
Here is how we would build it:
- Wrists: a red or maroon bangle stack, two to six pieces per wrist. Resin is lighter than glass and does not shatter on a knock, but it has zero stretch, so check your size first.
- Ears: chandbalis, the crescent-shaped "moon earring". Choose a lighter pair with pearls or stones that contrast with your outfit.
- Waist: an adjustable gold-tone waist chain worn over the pleats. It replaces a heavy necklace as the second focal point.
- Skip: a big necklace plus big earrings plus a full stack. Pick two heroes, not three.
Budget is less of a barrier than people think. At Hashtack, a pair of pearl earrings starts at ₹129 and a star belly chain at ₹279, while complete red-and-gold bangle stacks sit between ₹799 and ₹1,299. A full three-piece look from our Karwa Chauth edit comes to about ₹2,200. Orders above ₹499 ship free from Noida, cash on delivery works across India, and in Delhi NCR you can still get same-day delivery on the day itself if you order on WhatsApp before 2 PM.
One honest note: everything we sell is fashion jewellery in resin, wood, brass and gold-tone alloy, not real gold. If your family expects gold for shagun, buy that piece from a jeweller and use these for everything else.

What Jewellery Should You Wear on Karwa Chauth?
Wear jewellery that belongs to the shringar and survives a 14-hour fast: bangles, earrings and a waistband first, then a ring or a slim chain if you want more. Most women add a maang tikka and sindoor on top, which is why we leave the neck quiet.
The day has two halves. In the morning you are eating sargi, getting through work or chores, and probably not dressed up yet. In the evening you sit for katha, then wait for the moon with a thali and a sieve. The second half is where the jewellery matters. So plan the look around the puja muhurat, not around breakfast.
Our rule is simple. Choose two hero zones and keep the third supporting. Bangles plus chandbalis, with a fine waist chain. Or bangles plus a gemstone waist chain, with small earrings. Three heavy zones on a fasting day is how you end up taking things off at 7 PM.
Why Are Red Bangles Worn on Karwa Chauth?
Red bangles are worn because choodiyan, traditionally red, are one of the sixteen adornments of a married woman, and Karwa Chauth is the day most women follow that list closely. LatestLY's solah shringar list for Karwa Chauth places bangles alongside sindoor, bindi, earrings and the waistband.
Bangles even travel inside the ritual. Women exchange decorated clay pots called karvas before the fast, and those pots often carry bangles along with sweets and small cosmetics, according to Wikipedia's account of the festival.
Red is not the only right answer, though. Maroon, wine and deep crimson read just as festive in lamp light, and they look richer against a red saree than a second, identical red. That is why our own Karwa Chauth stacks lean crimson and maroon rather than pillar-box red: the Crimson Noir Stack mixes crimson, black and gold, and the Maroon & Gold Spiral Bangle Set pairs glossy maroon with textured gold-tone bands.
How Many Bangles Should You Wear on Karwa Chauth, and in What Size?
There is no fixed count. Even numbers on each wrist are common, and sets of four sell well every October, but two chunky resin bangles can carry the same weight as twelve thin glass ones. Size matters more than number.
Get the size wrong and the whole look fails. A loose bangle slides to your knuckles every time you hold the thali; a tight one leaves a red ring on your wrist by evening. Indian bangle sizes are written as 2.4, 2.6, 2.8 and so on, and each number maps to an inner diameter.
| Bangle size | Inner diameter | Inner circumference | Usually suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2.2 | 5.4 cm | 17.0 cm | Very slim hands |
| 2.4 | 5.7 cm | 17.9 cm | Slim hands |
| 2.6 | 6.0 cm | 18.8 cm | Average hands |
| 2.8 | 6.3 cm | 19.8 cm | Broader hands |
| 2.10 | 6.7 cm | 21.0 cm | Larger hands |
Full chart, including the in-between sizes, in our guide to measuring bangle size at home.
The quickest home check needs a thread. Press your thumb into your palm as if a bangle were going on, wrap the thread around the widest part of the hand, mark the overlap, measure it in centimetres and divide by 3.14. That gives you the inner diameter to match against the chart.
From our packing table: resin bangles have no give at all. A glass bangle can sometimes be coaxed over the knuckle with a little soap; a resin one either fits or it doesn't. Our Crimson Edge Bangles, for example, are size 2.6, about 6 cm across the inside. If your thread says you sit between two sizes, go up, not down. A slightly loose bangle stays on with its neighbours. A tight one simply stays in the box.
Not sure of her size because you are buying for your wife? Choose an open cuff such as the Amour Open Heart Gold Cuff or a bracelet like the Gilded Rouge Bracelet with its row of red stones. Both skip the sizing problem entirely.
Glass, Resin or Wooden Bangles: Which Is Best for Karwa Chauth?
Glass is the most traditional, resin is the most practical, and wood is the lightest-looking. For a long fasting day, we would pick resin with one or two gold-tone pieces mixed in.
| Material | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Glass | The classic sound, deep traditional reds, low price | Cracks on a single knock against a steel thali or tap. We don't sell glass for that reason. |
| Resin | Rich crimson and maroon colours, a glossy finish, chunky looks without the weight | No stretch, so sizing must be right. Can chip if dropped on a marble floor. |
| Wood | Warm, earthy stacks for yellow, orange or ivory outfits | Keep away from water, so take them off before washing up after the fast. |
| Gold-tone metal cuff | Gifting when you don't know her size | Perfume and sweat dull the finish; wipe it dry after the puja. |
Our resin and wooden bangles are handmade, so two sets of the same design will differ slightly in shade. We like that. You may not, if you want both wrists to match exactly, so buy one set and split it across both hands. Browse every colour in our resin bangles collection or go warmer with wooden bangles such as the Rustic Heritage Wooden Bangle Stack and the Earthy Harmony Bangles.
Are Chandbali Earrings Right for Karwa Chauth?
Yes, and the name tells you why. Chandbali joins chand (moon) and bali (earring), and the shape is a crescent. On a festival that ends with every woman looking for the moon, a crescent at each ear is a quiet piece of symbolism.
The style is usually traced back to Mughal-era courts, and Hyderabad is the city most closely tied to it; Aza Fashions' chandbali guide credits the Nizams' Hyderabad, while other accounts describe the design spreading there from northern courts. Either way, it became a bridal staple, which makes it an easy fit for a day when many women repeat their wedding look.
Our pick for a red outfit is the White Stone With Mini Pearl Half Moon Chandbali. White and pearl stand out against red; red-on-red earrings vanish in photos. For yellow, orange or rust outfits, the Rust Tassel With Beaded Chandbali is the softer choice.
What Is the Difference Between Chandbali and Jhumka Earrings?
A chandbali is built on a flat, crescent-moon frame. A jhumka is a dome or bell that hangs down. Some designs combine the two, with a small jhumka hanging from the bottom of a chandbali.
So which one for Karwa Chauth? Chandbalis frame the face sideways and suit an open hairstyle or a low bun. Jhumkas move more and suit a high bun, where the neck is visible. If you are wearing a heavy maang tikka, choose the lighter of the two so your face isn't fighting three focal points.
Which Earrings Look Good on a Saree for the Puja?
Earrings that contrast with the saree's main colour and border look best. With a heavy zari border, go plain gold-tone. With a plain silk, go for colour.
Two budget options from our edit do this well. The Red & Gold Sikka Bali (₹349) is a coin-style hoop that suits cotton and silk sarees. The Golden Gleam Pearls Earrings (₹129) are small enough to wear with a maang tikka without competing. And if you want options for the whole festival week, the Golden Glam Earring Set of 10 costs ₹199 for ten pairs.
Should You Wear a Waist Chain (Kamarbandh) on Karwa Chauth?
Yes. The kamarband, or waistband, is part of the solah shringar list, so a waist chain is a return to tradition, not a modern add-on. The difference today is weight. A bridal kamarbandh can be a solid, heavy belt; a waist chain is a fine chain that sits on the saree and moves with you.
Here is our opinion: a waist chain is the most underrated piece of Karwa Chauth jewellery. It draws the eye to the drape, it shows up in every full-length photo by the sieve, and it lets you skip a heavy necklace entirely. Of everything in this guide, it is the piece we would add first.
Pick by outfit. The Verdant Heritage Gemstone Waist Chain (green, ivory and smoky stones in a gold-tone frame) is the closest to a traditional kamarbandh. The Celestial Star Pearl Waist Chain hangs star charms and a pearl drop, which fits a night spent looking at the sky. For a lighter line there's the Pearl Drape Layered Waist Chain, plus two single-strand belly chains, the Starlight Belly Chain and the Snake Whisper Belly Chain, at ₹279 each. See every style in our body chains and waist chains collection or the smaller pearl body chains edit.
How Do You Wear a Waist Chain With a Saree or Lehenga?
Wear it over the saree, just above the pleats, after the pallu is pinned. On a lehenga, let it sit on the skirt's waistband or slightly below it.
- Drape and pin the saree completely first. A waist chain put on before the pallu always ends up underneath it.
- Fasten the chain at the side, not the front, so the clasp hides under the pallu's fall.
- Adjust the length until the chain sits flat across the pleats with a soft dip at the centre.
- Tuck any extender tail behind the pleats.
- Sit down once and stand up again. If the chain rides up, loosen it by one link.
What we've learned: the clasp is where a waist chain fails, never the chain. Our Starlight and Snake Whisper chains close with a hook; the Celestial Star chain uses a lobster clasp with an extender. A hook is faster to put on but can slip open if the pallu keeps brushing it, which is exactly why we tell you to fasten it at the side. When you take it off at night, hang it straight or lay it flat in a pouch. Thrown into a bowl with bangles, a fine chain knots in minutes.
Wearing a suit or anarkali instead? Wear the chain over the kurta at the natural waist, the slimmest part of the torso. It works like a belt and gives a flared anarkali some shape.
Which Colour Should You Wear on Karwa Chauth, and Which Jewellery Goes With It?
Red is the most traditional colour, and pink, orange, yellow and gold are also widely treated as auspicious. Many women repeat their wedding outfit. Match your jewellery to the outfit you have already picked, using contrast rather than repetition.
| Outfit colour | Bangles | Earrings | Waist |
|---|---|---|---|
| Red | Crimson with gold (Crimson Noir) | White stone and pearl chandbali | Pearl Drape |
| Maroon or wine | Maroon & Gold Spiral or the Bordeaux Reverie Bracelet | Red & Gold Sikka Bali | Verdant Heritage |
| Pink | Gilded Rouge Bracelet plus a gold cuff | Golden Gleam Pearls | Starlight |
| Ivory, pastel or gold | Ivory Éclat or Amber Tide Reverie | Red & Gold Sikka Bali, to add the red | Celestial Star Pearl |
| Green | Crimson Edge, for the classic red-green pairing | Golden Gleam Pearls | Verdant Heritage |
| Yellow or orange | Golden Ember Luxe Stack or Earthy Harmony | Rust Tassel Chandbali | Snake Whisper |
Black is the colour people ask about most. Many families avoid it on Karwa Chauth, so ask yours first. If black is fine at home, the Noir Gilded Harmony stack or the Crimson Noir set brings in the red and gold that keeps the look festive.
What Jewellery to Wear on Your First Karwa Chauth?
On your first Karwa Chauth, wear your wedding outfit, or something close to it, and let the jewellery be lighter than your bridal set. You will be photographed a lot and fed very little. Heavy bridal earrings for 14 hours are hard work.
A first-year look we like: your wedding chooda or a crimson resin stack, the pearl half-moon chandbalis, and the Verdant Heritage waist chain over the lehenga. It reads bridal without being a copy of the wedding day. If your mother-in-law is giving you jewellery for the day, build around that piece instead and keep everything else simple.

What Is a Simple Karwa Chauth Look for a Working Day?
Karwa Chauth 2026 is a Thursday, so plenty of women will fast at the office and dress up only after getting home. Wear one piece to work and add the rest at 5 PM.
At work: a single gold-tone cuff, such as the Golden Spiral Cuff (₹429), or the Gilded Rouge Bracelet with a kurta. At home before the puja: add the bangle stack and chandbalis, and slip the waist chain on last. Keep the evening pieces in one small pouch in your bag. Our Crimson Muse Wristlet and Scarlet Muse Pouch are both red, so even the pouch matches; more sizes sit in our makeup and travel pouches collection.
How Do You Keep Jewellery Comfortable Through the Fast?
Choose lighter versions of each piece, put on the heaviest one last, and take nothing off and on repeatedly. The fast runs from about 6:31 AM to moonrise, so your earlobes and wrists are doing a long shift.
- Earrings: wear studs or small hoops until the evening, then switch to chandbalis for the katha. Earlobes tire faster than anything else.
- Bangles: take them off while cooking sargi or the evening meal. Heat and steam are hard on resin and wood.
- Waist chain: put it on after you have sat down to test the drape. Adjust once, then leave it.
- Perfume: spray it before the jewellery goes on, never after. Alcohol-based scent dulls gold-tone finishes.
After the moon, wipe every piece with a soft dry cloth and store it apart from the others. Ten seconds of care now is the difference between wearing the same set next year and buying a new one.
What Should You Avoid Wearing on Karwa Chauth?
Avoid anything heavy at all three points at once, anything too tight, and colours your family considers inauspicious. Black and white are the two most families skip; red, pink, orange, yellow and gold are the safe set.
A few more we'd skip. Long necklaces get caught on the thali and the sieve. Brand-new heels plus brand-new earrings make for a painful evening, so test new pieces at home for an hour before the day. And don't buy a bangle stack in a size you are guessing; buy a cuff instead.
One thing we won't pretend about: our pieces are fashion jewellery. If you need real gold for shagun or a family tradition, buy that from a jeweller. For everything else on the day, the pieces below will do the job for a fraction of the price.

Karwa Chauth Jewellery: Frequently Asked Questions
When is Karwa Chauth in 2026?
Karwa Chauth 2026 falls on Thursday, 29 October. It is observed on the fourth day of the waning moon in the Hindu calendar, which lands in October or November each year. The fast usually begins around 6:31 AM and ends at moonrise, which is expected around 8:17 to 8:18 PM in Delhi. Moonrise can differ by 15 minutes or more between cities, so check a panchang for where you live. Some families also follow a regional calendar, so confirm the date at home before you plan outfits and deliveries.
Is it mandatory to wear red on Karwa Chauth?
No, it isn't mandatory. Red is the most traditional colour because it is the bridal colour, and many women wear their wedding outfit again. But pink, orange, yellow and gold are also widely treated as auspicious for the day. If your outfit isn't red, bring red in through the jewellery instead: a crimson bangle stack, red stone bracelet or red-and-gold hoop earrings. That keeps the tradition while letting you wear the colour you actually love. Ask your family too, since some households have their own customs about colours for the puja.
Can we wear yellow on Karwa Chauth?
Yes. Yellow is one of the colours commonly listed as auspicious for Karwa Chauth, alongside red, pink, orange and gold. It also photographs beautifully at dusk, when most of the puja happens. With yellow, avoid all-yellow jewellery. Warm caramel and gold-tone bangles, rust or red earrings, and a fine gold waist chain give the outfit contrast. Our Golden Ember Luxe Bangle Stack and Rust Tassel Chandbali were practically made for a mustard or marigold saree. Add one red piece, such as a sikka bali, if your family prefers red to appear somewhere in the look.
What are the items in Karwa Chauth solah shringar?
Solah shringar is the set of sixteen adornments traditionally worn by married women, and many follow it on Karwa Chauth. Commonly listed items include bindi, sindoor, maang tikka, kajal, nath (nose ring), haar (necklace), karn phool (earrings), mehndi, choodiyan (bangles), baajuband (armlet), haathphool and rings, hair ornaments, kamarband (waistband), payal (anklets), itar (perfume) and the bridal outfit. You don't need every item to observe the day. Bangles, earrings and a waistband are three of the sixteen, and they are also the easiest to buy and wear comfortably through a full fast.
What time does the Karwa Chauth fast start?
The Karwa Chauth fast starts at sunrise, which is around 6:31 AM on 29 October 2026 in Delhi. Before that, many women eat sargi, a pre-dawn meal often sent or prepared by the mother-in-law. The fast is traditionally nirjala, without food or water, and ends after the moon is sighted, usually through a sieve, and water is offered. For jewellery, this timing matters: you'll be wearing your pieces for close to 14 hours, so put heavy earrings on only in the evening and keep bangles off while cooking.
What is a good gold gift for Karwa Chauth?
If you want real gold, buy from a certified jeweller and look for hallmarking. Light pieces like studs, a slim chain or a single bangle are the usual Karwa Chauth gold gifts. If you want the gold look without gold prices, choose gold-tone pieces she will actually wear on the day, such as an open heart cuff, a layered necklace and bracelet set, or a gold-tone waist chain. At Hashtack these cost between ₹399 and ₹1,499. We sell fashion jewellery, not gold, and we would rather say that clearly than have you find out later.
When should you wear a waist chain?
Wear a waist chain whenever an outfit has a visible waist or drape: sarees, lehengas, anarkalis, and also dresses and co-ord sets. On Karwa Chauth, put it on last, after the saree is fully pinned, and fasten it at the side so the clasp hides under the pallu. A waist chain isn't only for brides or beach holidays. The kamarband is part of the traditional solah shringar, so wearing one on Karwa Chauth is closer to tradition than it may seem. Lighter chains also work for Diwali parties the following week.
Which waist chain is best for a saree?
The best waist chain for a saree is adjustable, sits flat across the pleats, and has a secure clasp. A gemstone or pearl design works for silk and heavy sarees, while a single fine chain suits cotton, chiffon or georgette. Avoid very long hanging tassels if you'll sit on the floor for the katha, since they get trapped. Our Verdant Heritage Gemstone Waist Chain is the closest to a traditional kamarbandh, while the Pearl Drape, Starlight and Celestial Star chains are lighter and adjustable for most waist sizes.
What is the best gift for Karwa Chauth?
The best Karwa Chauth gift is something she can wear at the puja that same evening. Jewellery works well because it joins the shringar of the day: a red bangle stack, chandbali earrings or a waist chain all fit. Match the gift to her outfit colour if you know it. If you don't know her bangle size, pick earrings, an open cuff or an adjustable waist chain. Give it in the morning, beside her sargi, so she has time to plan her look around it. A handwritten note costs nothing and is often the part she keeps.
Before the Moon Comes Up
Pick the outfit first. Then choose two hero pieces from bangles, chandbalis and a waist chain, and keep the third light. Check the bangle size with a thread, test new earrings for an hour, and fasten the waist chain at the side.
That's it. The rest of the day belongs to the katha, the thali and the wait. If you'd like help choosing, browse the full Hashtack Karwa Chauth edit, or plan the week after with our Diwali gifts for her. Happy Karwa Chauth from all of us in Noida. 🌙
